It's filled with techniques you can use, such as how to light and photograph various difficult surfaces, using explanations that are not overly technical. This update has kept it fresh for the modern photographer. There are newer books on lighting, but this is the one you should start with. We receive a great many books on lighting for review, and this one is one of the absolute best we have ever had the pleasure to see. It's hard to believe that Fil and Paul's classic text was originally released a decade ago.
You want to improve your lighting problem solving skills, get this book. You want to improve your understating of lighting, get this book. Simply put, get this book. I'm going to cut right to the chase. You want to understand lighting, get this book.
Instead of giving you an overly technical book that gives specific light set-ups, you are given the theory and principles of lighting as it relates to photography and even specific areas within photography such as lighting glass and metal. Instead, by explaining light, how it acts, and how you can manipulate it, they give you the principles you need to light anything.
So, get your lights out, read until you understand, and when you put them both together, you truly will be able to light anything. If you're looking for the quick "put your light in this exact spot" reference, this isn't the book for you. They encourage the reader to follow along in the book, not just reading it, but by putting the principles to practice.
"Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. The verbal explanations are clear and concise, the graphics even more so.The magic about this book is that the authors do not focus on teaching you how to light one specific thing by providing a lighting set-up.
If you're looking to truly learn photographic lighting, then you can't go wrong with this book. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life." This is what comes to mind after reading this book.
The authors break things down to an elementary level so that even the least technical reader can easily grasp the concepts and apply them.
you can find answers to any of questions you have in your mind.detailed explanation for beginners and also for advanced.the graphs, illustrations, many example photos for every subject.i deadly advice to all who intend to buy a photography book and have suspicion to buy which one.this is the best of best and now i looking in amazon for the writers other books. thank you all writers this is the best photography book i have ever read.
The parts that I have read so far have been easy to read and understandable, but covers the subject in depth. Each example is illustrated with a setup diagram and a color photograph of the result that it produces.
I've already implemented some of the ideas and had excellent results. Makes it easy to understand what each light placement produces in the photograph.
This book was recommended as the bible for flash photography, and it is. The lengthy chapter on photographing people starts with a basic one-light setup and progresses up in complexity from there.
I highly recommend this book. It covers the subject of using light for photography from A to Z.
How to photograph metal objects and glass objects each get a chapter.
